In Brazil, the reality of high school becomes tariff in research agendas in education. The expansion of secondary education has been observed to occur in the context of the implementation of recent educational policies, the results of independent evaluations on the deficit of number of teacher, and also of new teacher’ training policies, resulting from the demands of young Brazilians. This study aims to present data and analysis from a literature review to understand the principles that guide secondary education in Brazil. The primary sources are the official documents from the MEC and INEP, as well as research reports and studies that consider the primary issues of this educational field. They identify past and future challenges, developments and impediments, while acknowledging its expansion and strategic position in the molding of the youth and the construction of a more equitable and just society.
