Using data related to adequate learning in Portuguese and mathematics from municipalities in Bahia, the article explores the structural ineptitude of educational institutions, especially public ones, in the contemporary context marked by neoliberal policies. The analyses revolve around the central concept of ‘the productivity of the unproductive school,’ an idea introduced by Frigotto to describe how the lack of functionality of public schools can, paradoxically, serve the interests of neoliberal capitalism by perpetuating a docile and depoliticized population.
