Abstract

GONDRA, José Gonçalves. Eyes in America: a reading over C. Hippeau’s written reports. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2002, n.19, pp.161-186. ISSN 0104-4060.

I examined the papers collection about public education written by Hippeau, between 1869 and 1881. My focus was on the exam of what was imported, translated, read and appropriated to Brazil at that time. This way of analysis made possible my working up on the hypothesis of exclusivity of European education model transplantation to Brazil, at the same time, this way allowed us to deal with the hypothesis that there is an effective program into school education in the papers, when we pay attention to the rigor, detail and exactitude of the material. The mentioned program is copied from the American model, which is represented as a stage of spectacular conquests in the education area, a spectacle translatable into the fundamental axis of progress and pedagogical modernity (liberty, freed, obligatorily, secularization and hygiene), axis of the new civilization that people desired to build, legitimize and diffuse: the North American civilization.
