MACEDO, Benedita Cruz  y  MARTINS, Lúcia de Araújo Ramos. Mothers’ views on their children with Down Syndrome in relation to the educational Process. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2004, n.23, pp.143-159. ISSN 0104-4060.

This article presents the results of an investigation carried out in Natal/RN, which aimed at identifying mother’s views on her son/daughter with Down syndrome, as well as his/her integration in the regular school system. It also analyses each mother’s participation in her son/daughter’s educational process, and her expectations in relation to his/her future. In the study, a qualitative approach was adopted, aiming at a clearer understanding of the problem under consideration. The data collection instrument adopted was the structured interview. The analysis of the collected data suggests that the mothers’ choice for the regular school system reflected an endeavour to provide their children with the best educational alternative. In general, the mothers showed an optimistic view of their children and confidence in their possibilities, which motivated them to make a significant investment on their education, aiming at their personal growth and social and cognitive development.
