Abstract

This work focuses Scientific Academy of Rio de Janeiro as a school that graduated men of science. That was a teaching and learning place characterized by practices of nature observation, experiment making, discovering debate, information socialization and political thought, which gave opportunity of theoretic and practical formation to its participants. Working as an association linked to the Vice-Kingdom, the Academy extrapolated the role of producer of information related to the best economic exploration of the colony and developed functions of educative nature in a way it enabled circulation of a scientific culture related to natural sciences, denoting illustration arriving to Brazilian land.
