Abstract

RUSSEFF, Ivan. Brazilian intelligence at the turning point of 1920/30: encounters and disencounters between writers and educators. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2005, n.26, pp.251-267. ISSN 0104-4060.

The absence of a larger number of academic studies which explore the relationship between Literature and Education constitutes one of the motivations for proposing this text; this, because besides the methodologies for teaching literature, there is not very much that brings pedagogues and men of letters together. Thus, Literature and Education will be considered through the broad vision of History, reflecting on the problems which refer to Brazilian educational thought and contributing to the critical understanding of the ideas that influenced our culture. In relation to the characters in this narrative, the study will be centred on two of the most expressive intellectuals of the period: Fernando de Azevedo and Mário de Andrade, whose importance for education and national literature makes further presentation unnecessary. As to the period being focused on, known in our history as the turning point of the years 1920 and 1930, the option is justified as it constitutes the type of incubator for the germinal ideas of the “intelligentsia” of the country, as will be seen throughout the exposition.

Keywords : Education; Literature; Brazilian Culture.
