The paper focuses on the continuing education of university lecturers considering the presence of digital information and communication technologies and the boom of distance education usage in Brazil. The paper starts with an overview of the expansion of higher education based on the use of distance education courses in the country. We examine the necessary changes in higher education considering the emergence of cyberculture. The paper discusses the importance of understanding digital networks as structuring new communicational, training and learning practices. We argue the importance of public policies that seek to democratize access to these technologies. Continuing university education in this context is discussed from the point of view of lecturers' own experience as a learning process, emphasizing the experience of teaching online as part of the necessary immersion into the world of cyberculture.
