This article discusses the purposes of basic education and schools in contemporary society, pointing their great challenges due to the social changes that are underway. Therefore, some questions about the teachers’ role facing sociocultural demands are highlighted, which leads to a discussion about the education offered in initial teacher education programs. Research evinces the precariousness of this initial education and its deviation from the movements emerging in society. The article indicates the need for a real revolution on structure and curriculum of basic teachers’ initial education in graduate level. A question is raised: why deep changes do not occur, even though it has been a long time since many studies have pointed out the crisis in initial teacher education due to its formative weaknesses?
