Abstract

The following article is a description of the educational policies that started to be followed in Chile from the beginning of the military dictatorship. It also explains how these policies became consolidated during the return to democracy and the consequences for the current school educational system. The starting imposition, by Augusto Pinochet (Military dictatorship, 1973-1990), of a mercantilist logic for society, education, culture and economy has shaped the current situation we are in. This imposition makes it very difficult for changes to happen in the school system (changes that would allow reducing the educational inequalities present in the country). International organisms have denounced that Chile has a discriminatory educational system, with schools for the poor, schools for the middle class and schools for the rich. Despite the efforts carried out by the “Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia” (Coalition of Parties for Democracy) in order to improve this situation, all proposals have been focused on aspects that have not allowed a transformation of the structure that currently supports the above mentioned inequalities.
