ABSTRACT This research is part of an overview of the difficulties related to biology education in the perspective of sustainable development and teacher training in this area to work in basic education. It aims to identify the issues related to environment and sustainable development which are considered hard to be taught, characterizing the reasons for such difficulties. The research has been developed in a qualitative and quantitative approach. Overall, we found that the survey participants indicate problems to include matters on sustainable development in their future classes and that the absence of a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary approach represents an important reason for the difficulties in teaching from the perspective of sustainability, since this would enable students to analyze the environment from the point of view of social and economic dimensions, in addition to assessing the ethical aspects related to them.
