The process of constitution of a specific academic space of the area of Sciences of Education in Portugal is related to the effervescence of scientific education in other countries in the nineteenth century, caused by the relationship between industrialization and universalization of education, as well as the demands themselves and national struggles in education in the next century. Therefore, the objective of this space constitutes a complex exercise of reflexivity, in which the Portuguese context should be taken as a sui generis expression that makes it possible, through its specificities, to understand broader dynamics of the scientific field and higher education of this country. This is the scenario of the interview with the retired professor of the Institute of Education (IE) of the University of Lisbon (UL), Maria Teresa Estrela. It is based on the academic position of the professor - one of the pioneering female scientists in the autonomization of Education Sciences in Portugal, with decades of experience in UL since the end of the dictatorship in 1974 - to promote a dialogue between her formative and professional trajectory and the own development of the space of Sciences of Education in the portuguese academic scene.
