Abstract

CHARLOT, Bernard. “Quality of education”: the birth of an ambiguous concept. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2021, vol.37, e81286.  Epub Aug 11, 2021. ISSN 1984-0411.  https://doi.org/10.1590/0104-4060.81286.

The article presents the interest in the concept of “quality of education” and its international context. It shows that the concept was born from reflections on the reform of Mathematics and Sciences teaching in the 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century, in the United States and Europe, and it spread in the 80s and 90s of the same century as the educational component of the liberal movement of modernization and globalization, in an environment of intense economic competition, which mobilizes Mathematics and Science as instruments of wealth and power. Taking into account the ambiguity of the concept, the article points to some problems to be faced when trying to use this concept.

Keywords : Quality of education; Public policies.
