COUTINHO, Priscila de Oliveira. Conceptual and methodological reflections on the “baroque” of biographies. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2021, vol.37, e75644.  Epub 08-Abr-2021. ISSN 1984-0411.  https://doi.org/10.1590/0104-4060.75644.

In this text, I intend to present conceptual and methodological reflections produced in doctoral research that was dedicated to the sociological reconstruction of the trajectory of a woman, a “transfuge de classe”, called Juscelina. The research lasted 16 months, in which interviews, research in various types of documents and ethnographic incursions were carried out. Of the many challenges of research, I present two questions that articulate. The first refers to the very use of the concept of transfer. The second discusses the sociological value of biographical research. Practicing the intellectual craftsmanship that builds explanations in the intertwining between field research and the social sciences literature, I expose the process that led me to consider productive the concept of transfuge to the case under analysis, and argue that the criticisms of the sociological field to the biographical method, exemplified synthesized in the classic “The Biographical Illusion”, by Pierre Bourdieu, must be relativized in consideration of the ways in which each empirical investigation proceeds. For that end, I draw on my experience and the arguments of Schwartz (1990) and Lahire (2010). I conclude that biographical research in social sciences does not need to subsume personal reports to the structural dimensions that also explain the trajectory (social and geographical origin, color, gender, level of education, etc.), but rather to articulate the Baroque richness of the visions of the self, the relationships built and the observed and lived world to the reconstruction of the structural constraints that pave the individual paths.
