Abstract

LOMBA, Maria Lúcia Resende  and  FARIA FILHO, Luciano Mendes. Teachers and their professional background: an interview with António Nóvoa. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2022, vol.38, e88222.  Epub Dec 06, 2022. ISSN 1984-0411.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1984-0411.88222.

To António Nóvoa, there are many ways to be a teacher: diverse options and pathways. However, in all of them, he defends the importance of understanding the complexity of the profession in all its dimensions: theoretical, experiential, cultural, political, ideological, and symbolic. Professional teaching knowledge is contingent, collective, and public. Based on this knowledge, he states that new models of teacher education should be organized in a preparation that guarantees teachers’ spaces and times to develop self-knowledge and self-reflection on the personal, professional, and collective dimensions of teaching.

Keywords : António Nóvoa; Pre- and in-service teacher education; Teaching profession; Teacher professional knowledge.
