Abstract

CORDEIRO, Albert Alan de Sousa  and  ARAUJO, Sônia Maria da Silva. Between coloniality and decoloniality: Teaching memories in basic education in the brazilian Amazon. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2023, vol.39, e85819.  Epub Sep 06, 2023. ISSN 1984-0411.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1984-0411.85819.

In this article we analyze the professional memories of basic education teachers who, in their pedagogical practice, relate school knowledge and popular culture in the context of the sociocultural complexity of the Brazilian Amazon. In addition to teaching, the research subjects are producers of popular culture, engaged in artistic manifestations of social minorities in the Amazon region. Methodologically, the memories narrated by the teachers were apprehended based on the guidelines of oral history and the analysis is based on decolonial thinking. The research concluded that the school is crossed by the phenomenon of coloniality and, consequently, governed by a monocultural epistemology that marginalizes the knowledge produced by populations that were victims of colonialism. However, contradictorily, the protagonists of the research, with their experiences in the scope of popular culture, question the knowledge socialized in this institution and, mediated by the dialogue with the knowledge produced in the Amazonian territory, expand the concepts of art and aesthetics, denounce racist and patriarchal practices and criticize the exploitation of human labor and nature in capitalism.
