Abstract

AZEVEDO, Mário Luiz Neves de. The academic field and metric regulation: autonomy, heteronomy and democracy - economistic interference. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2023, vol.39, e86030.  Epub Sep 06, 2023. ISSN 1984-0411.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1984-0411.86030.

This article aims to analyze governance based on indicators and manuals of “best practices”, the so-called management by benchmarking. In times of “metric society” (MAU, 2019; SANTOS, 2019; MULLER, 2019), this type of regulation, characteristically economistic, has even affected the academic and educational fields (BOURDIEU, 1996; LAVAL, 2020). In this sense, it is argued that economistic regulation, characteristic of administration by benchmarking, interferes with democracy (ROSANVALLON, 2007) and with the autonomy of specific social fields. Thus, to meet these objectives, methodologically, Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory is used.
