This article discusses, based on bibliographical research, the issue of military discipline transposed to educational institutions, through the project of civic-military schools. The objective is to demonstrate the distinction between the conception of military discipline and the conception of discipline resulting from the reception of the philosophical-pedagogical tradition. The latter, with an educational character, is intertwined with human formation and is conceived as a certain type of inner ethical activity, while the former has an external coercive character, consisting of obedient conformation to extrinsic determinants. To this end, Kant and Plato are revisited, which support an idea of discipline related to the formation of a free human being, shedding light on the distance between the two conceptions of discipline addressed.
