BIZZOTTO, Luciana Maciel; GOUVEA, Maria Cristina Soares de e CARVALHO, Levindo Diniz. Childhood, the school and territory: reflections from an urban occupation in Belo Horizonte. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2025, vol.41, e88522. Epub 10-Jul-2025. ISSN 1984-0411. https://doi.org/10.1590/1984-0411.88522.
The paper aims to contribute to the reflection on the relationship between the school, curriculum practice and social movements, in dialogue with approaches that bring the subjects and the territory in which the school is located to the center of the analysis. We seek to understand the impact of the presence of children from the 1,500 families of the Rosa Leão urban occupation on a public school, situated in the municipality of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The results of a survey of children living in the occupation will be analysed, with a greater focus on data from semi-structured interviews with families, occupation coordinators and representatives of public services in the area. Firstly, we discuss education as a right that guarantees the permanence of families in the territory and analyze how the arrival of the children from the occupation changed the dynamics of a school institution due to a history of social mobilization and implementation of Integral Education policies. Then, we argue that the children’s circulation through other public services in the territory has collaborated in the articulation of a social protection network, in which the school stands out. Finally, we raise possible contributions to the contemporary debate on children’s rights as they relate to social movements and education.
