The aim of this article is to identify and to characterize the academic production that historically addresses the administrative organization of education in the state of São Paulo. To this end, the text recovers and discusses the interpretations of master’s dissertations and doctoral theses, to investigate the approaches made by researchers in their treatment of the subject. So far, 11 academic papers have been located, including six doctoral theses and five master’s dissertations. The oldest text is from 1974 and the most current is from 2019. From the analysis of the material, it has been possible to note that the texts discuss the articulation between the specialization of the state with the provision of public services and the consolidation of an administrative apparatus to deal with education. Of all the research, a significant number made use of legislation as a documentary source, as well as those that used a theoretical framework based on Max Weber’s discussions on modern organizations to problematize the bureaucratic and hierarchical production processes of São Paulo’s educational apparatus. The discussions held show that broadening the debate on the subject can contribute to expanding and deepening the interpretations that have been consolidated so far, based on the use of new documentary sources or other theoretical references.
