On the basis of a documentary research supported by a thematic bibliographical review, the text discusses the politics of human resources for work in the nurseries (groups with children between six months and two years), adopted by a city of the Rio Grande do Sul state. The text is based on the presupposition that to take care of babies and educate them one needs specific formation. We conclude to the nonexistence, within the schools investigated, of the belief that babies may be educated. This led to public policies of outsourcing and economy of public money. It this, the double function (take care and educate) of infantile education meets obstacles which at times turn nurseries into simple collective caring place.
