Angelina da Rocha de Assis, like many educators of her time, has left her pedagogical mark indelibly tinted with Christian morals as she conducted herself firmly, determinedly and with austerity, not forgetting to mention her kindness, combined with her friendly and helpful personality. She has dedicated herself to preschool education at a time when officially starting school was from seven-years-old, in order to motivate in children the interest and curiosity for reading and writing. She considers leisure and playful activities extremely important, and these have been the target of her academic focus. She taught that children would only be “touched” through affection, care and praise. This article aims to understand this educator’s ideas and pedagogical practices and also get to know the principals and values adopted by her, the authors that have influenced her and the knowledge that she has produced on preschool education. This research is the result of a long and careful investigation of documentation, newspapers, books, theses and magazines, and particularly from oral history.
