ISSN 0104-7043.

This work analyzes how children from 4 to 23 months of age and their educators organize and transform the space/place of their child care center. We use the case study as a method for looking at how the environment for young children has been planned out by educators. We analyze the criteria for selection and arrangement of furniture and equipment. To that end, we investigated the spatial transformations that took place in 3 nursery rooms (1 y-old and 2 y-old) at an institutional daycare center in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 2006 and 2008. We analyzed the way in which they were organized by educators under the direction of managers working together with the research team. Spatial structures were introduced, photographs were taken, and workshops were performed, along with brainstorming sessions with the educators where our lines of investigation were discussed, leading them to develop an investigative and reflective glance toward the environments that were being created. As the educators participated in the research, the spatial organization gained an enhanced role in their pedagogic work, no longer being relegated to a secondary consideration in their planning. The educators were able to rethink their own understanding of the spatial aspects of their pedagogical activities, increasing the potential of the environments in the activity room. At the same time, we contributed to the permanent arrangement of the day care center, stimulating a collective rethinking of the natural flow of everyday activities, and helping them keep in mind the fact that space is a pedagogical element of daycare.
