This article presents part of the discussion of a research results whose objective was to investigate private university professors’ representations about teaching. The participants of the study are professors of two private universities in Bahia. The data had been collected by means of half-structured interview and by free associations. The deriving data of the interview technique had been dealt with in accordance with the analysis of content of the thematic type (BARDIN, 1977). Results indicate that the elements of participant representations who emerge of the data relate to two dimensions: one that deals with social and professional statute (conditions of work, work load); and the other whose focus is teaching practice, the concrete exercise of the teaching-learning process. Concerning the first dimension, the elements of participants representation vary in function of the institution where they act. Regarding the second dimension, data indicate a great convergence, independently of the institution, in relation to some elements of the representations concerning teaching in universities.
