There is a huge gap between the needed educator for the 21st century and the present educator resulting from the 20th century formation. Thinking critically about the teachers´ formation, besides the objective aspects, like mastering and having a practical and theoretical aptitude in the own work field, professional autonomy, having the capacity of taking decisions, of anticipating the consequences of those decisions and of evaluating critically the action, involves the consideration of opinions, appraisals, beliefs, attitudes, expectations and the main meanings of the own teachers - social representations - about the main aspects of their activity and the context in which it takes place. These reasons motivated an exploratory research about the social representations of professional teaching in primary school teachers in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. An intentional sample was selected whose size was determined by the criteria of informational saturation. The results show that the professional level of teaching is a secondary attribute of the idealized aspects, like the vocation and the commitment, which show the ideological aspect of the social representations.
