This article aims to describe an experience carried out as part of the course “Supervised traineeship” in the Museology program of the Federal University of Bahia, in the field of Cultural and Educational Action of Museums. This research was carried out in a Public High school in the city of Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) and was based on the collection of data referring to the difficulties that arise in applying the Law 11.645/08, which includes the study of indigenous history and culture in primary and secondary education, as well as the role museums may play in this process. The data collected made it possible to analyze the position of teachers, the knowledge that students have about Indian peoples and the impact of cultural action on this knowledge. In order to accomplish this, the author resorted to ethnographic observation, applied a questionnaire to the students and carried out specific work at the Archeology and Ethnography Museum of the Federal University of Bahia. The conclusion points to the existence of generic and superficial information about Indigenous peoples, and suggests that the ethnographic museums may be used efficiently to cover such themes. Thus it suggests that articulated actions should be set up between museological institutions and schools, as the result of public policies in the fields of education and culture.
