The present article presents part of the ethnographic data collected during the research for a master’s degree on indigenous school education in the Tupinambá community from the Serra do Padeiro, in the municipality of Buerarema, in South of the state of Bahia (Brazil). Initially we place the construction of ethnic identity in the community within the scope of a wider process of organization of the indigenous peoples of the Northeast and point to the religious component of this identity web. This brief characterization, which draws on other research centered on the political, social and symbolic processes of Tupinambá ethnic elaboration, allows us to understand the meaning attributed to school education and how it incorporates, the wider orientations of the communal project. Situating the school in its context allows us to describe and analyze practices and discourses of the teachers about what they consider to be differentiated education. Finally, we try to understand the dilemmas and possibilities placed by the indigenous school experience developed by this specific community, analyzing a possible modulation in the construction of a differentiated education.
