The article focuses on the meaning produced by youths in their contemporary cultural practices related to video-game and cosplay, when they assume the characteristics of their favorite characters. The interpretation of these practices, with the support of Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of mask as well as the idea of avatar formulated by Arlindo Machado, gave us subsidy to understand them as ones of the many rituals of aesthetic expressiveness, through which youths are expressing themselves, playing new roles, relating themselves socially and exercising their citizenship. Besides this assessment, this paper point out the necessity of rupture with the social representation that associate the so-called frivolous, hedonists and violent postures of the youths in the eyes of the media, suggesting the importance that the school rethinks its practices, considering the redefinition of the education subject in the contemporary world.
