Abstract

NASCIMENTO, Ester Fraga Vilas-Bôas Carvalho do  and  BERTINATTI, Nicole. A escola dominical presbiteriana: disseminação de saberes e práticas educativas. Revista da FAAEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.35, pp.95-104. ISSN 0104-7043.

This paper proposes to study the pedagogical model of the Presbyterian Sunday School in Brazil, characterizing it as a space for non-scholar education common in Protestant churches. We aim to analyze how the Presbyterian Sunday Schools were organized evaluating the methodology of teaching that was used. Our theoretical and methodological approach is based upon Roger Chartier (1999), Dominique Julia (2001), Jorge Nascimento (2008) and Carlo Ginzburg (2007), which offer categories of analysis such as: representations, school culture, extra-curricular education, and the indexical method . This work fits into the perspective of the New Cultural History, which enables researchers in History of Education to transcend the frontiers of their object of study, exploring other areas of knowledge. Our main documentary sources were Importance of Religious Education in the Consolidation of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil (KERR, 1925) and the First Regional Convention of the Sunday Schools in Rio de Janeiro (REIS, 1909). The results show Sunday School as a setting for the implementation of educational practices, where the main goal was to teach the Protestant doctrine through the Bible. The Sunday School became a relevant environment where new converts could met with a new religious culture and learned to interpret the Bible.

Keywords : Presbyterian Sunday School; Brazil; Teaching Practices.
