This paper examines the process of learning in Candomblé. Following Ingold’s analysis of learning as “training of attention”, it aims to shed light on the modes, techniques and relations through which new members of Candomblé become experienced participants. The paper is based on fieldwork among terreiros (Afro-Brazilian cult centers) of the city of Salvador, Bahia. It shows that learning in Candomblé involves the development of skills through an active engagement of the body in contexts which are both sensuous and meaningful. Although submission to elders defines the relational context through which new members learn, the dynamics of learning involves a complex web of relations (including those with the gods themselves) in which the roles of novice and master are often inverted.
