Abstract

SILVA, Valdélio Santos. Religiosidade, feitiçaria e poder na África e no Brasil. Revista da FAAEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.35, pp.201-215. ISSN 0104-7043.

The text is based on the premise that cultural referents shape the modalities of religious practices. Unlike western individualistic conceptions of religion, the religiosity of African origin is based on the collective experience of worshiping the gods. Dance, music, trance and the positive achievements on earth constitute the basic elements in this religious perspective. Nowadays, even if discourses about modernity structure and orientate part of the actions of individuals in Brazil, there still remains a significant influence of Afro-Brazilian religious beliefs and representations, including the ideology of witchcraft.

Keywords : Afro-Brazilian and African Religions; Witchcraft; Power and Modernity.
