ISSN 0104-7043.

This research is a reflection about black rural students and their interactions with school. It was realized in Santa Barbara, Bahia. It is rooted on cultural studies and promotes reflection about interrelations between rural world, culture, identity, school and resistance. We use oral history and private interview so that we could answer the following question: which strategies do the black students use to preserve their afro-brazilian and rural traditions in school, as ways of cultural resistance? One of the background discussions is based on the meaning of roça, a rural space of small agricultural production which is passing through a repossession process. Our results corroborate others found by other researchers. The relationship between these students and school is marked, on one hand, by prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination, and on the other hand, by many ways of cultural resistance. However not all the interviewees identify themselves as blacks, we identified in their speeches parts that talked about their experiences of being racially discriminated through “jokes” that took place in the school. The cultural resistance manifests itself in school by strategies ranging from the indiscipline, repetition and dropout. The school constitutes itself in a contested space through daily games which camouflage the “Truth”. The present Brazilian school is experimenting public politics which aim a more fair and democratic society society. At this time in Santa Barbara, however, affirmative action policies, toward social equality, have not yet effectively been enforced.
