Through the memories of twelve subjects, we analyzed in this research, some practices of schooling that led to clues about the organization of education in the rural municipality of Bom Jesus, located in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) in so-called Campos de Cima da Serra. The research aimed to identify and analyze certain ways to remedy to the lack of schools in that region, between the years 1910 and 1940. The methodology used was the Oral History. We listened to the memories belonging to the Municipal Collections Oral memory of the city. In the context of research, many elements make up to some extent the process of understanding the practices institutionalized, which I called “lessons with teachers at home,” a practice adopted in rural areas due to lack of schools. The elements discussed in the survey relate to gender relations, economics, culture, politics and religion. The relationship between them will, throughout the investigation, construct an educational scene, with their cultural peculiarities linked to public education both in the federal state and in the federated states.
