This paper presents and systematizes data collected in the context of the research project called Diverse Ruralities : subjects, institutions and pedagogical practices in the rural school of Bahia, Brazil. This project is realized in collaboration between the State University of Bahia, the Federal University of the Recôncavo of Bahia, and Paris 13 and Paris 8 French Universities. The research, financed by FAPESB and the CNPq aims to investigate educations practices which happen in various territories of identities of the state of Bahia, looking to understand how educational practices are articulated with their territories of implementation. We collected data through life histories, questionnaires, focus groups and open interviews. The research permit us to understand the presence of distinct scenes in rural education in the State of Bahia, that we can briefly summarize by, on one hand, the existence of politically traditional experiences associated to the official schools which turned school into a technical agency disconnected from the local reality; and, on the other hand, by the existence of progressive experiences, linked to social movements, where school is configured as a deeply rooted political agency.
