The proposal considerations in this article results from a research carried out in the insular territory of Salvador city aimed to understand the school trajectories of the citizens/women who participated on the Alphabetization Program "Salvador Cidade das Letras/Brazil Alfabetizado", identifying the values, meanings and expectations that are attributed to the acquisition and uses of the reading and the writing. The study still broach discussions about how the reading and the writing appear in the c1assroom dai1y, evidencing the difference existent between the desires and necessities that the women feel in reference to the improvement of the reading and the writing abilities and the failure in front of the non-relevant school contents. The use of oral history as a methodological procedure of qualitative aspect revealed more appropriate to the purpose of the research and the peculiarities of the socio cultural aspects that configure the school trajectories of those women whose demands had been restrained historically. The relevance of the resultant considerations from the inquiry enunciates the immediate necessity to think specific public politics that consider the educational necessities of social groups which inhabit the space of the island in Salvador city.
