The school management of public education is based on democratic principles, according to Brazilian legislation, offering opportunities for the school community to participate in the construction public school pedagogical proposal. Scientific studies, however, have revealed some difficulties in implementing democratic school management. The following research question was therefore formulated: What is the present situation of democratic school management after over two decades of implementation? The objective of this work is, thus, to identify the possibilities and limits of school and local community in the management of public school. In a case study developed in two public schools in the city of Aracaju / Sergipe, Brazil, their political pedagogical projects were analyzed in order to investigate the community perception about participating in the management of those schools, by means of interviews, questionnaires and participatory diagnosis. The research reveals that there is still demand for consolidating efficient democratic management which requires closer articulation between school and community through strategic management.
