The article is about management issues, training and evaluation regarding Religious Education as part of the scholar curriculum in Rio de Janeiro’s public primary schools. Our analysis is focused on the teachers training meetings of Religious Education in this state, including its forums. We have come to some conclusion after the observation of these spaces, the query to the minutes of all meetings (since 1996), and also the evaluation of materials distributed and interviews with teachers of religion. The first one is that the Municipal Department of Education performs this kind of management meetings in order to plan and discuss only with religion teachers, as there is not any similar meetings with other kind of teachers. Another conclusion is that these training spaces have a predominance of the Catholic Church setting asides other faiths or submitting them to their guidelines. We are therefore questioning what we can conclude about students assessment. We also discuss how religious education is considered by these teachers as a solution to what they perceive as “poor school performance.” Finally, we point out the need of a secular public education.
