This paper’s starting point is the verification of both opposition and complementarity between the traditional and innovative roles of education facing the human world, proposing innovation and not only preservation. We aim to present reflection based on how to think about education into these double roles and also about its task of forming critical consciousness able to direct the new generations in this scenario. This problem should be a matter for philosophy of education. We develop our reflection considering the ideas of Durkheim, Adorno, Arendt, Kant, Lipman, Dewey, and others, aiming to bring contributions to the presented problem. The results show the need of education to offer consistent help in the development of reflective and critical thinking for the new generations as the main resource to produce insights, judgments and consideration related to what should be preserved and what should be innovated. We conclude that the focus, at schools, may not be only in transmission of information, but also in critical reflective thinking that starts with the information provided, that is, developing the good thinking that feeds critical reasoning.
