This article is aimed at discussing the field of research on teacher education. In order to do that, the author sought to answer the following questions: how has the field of research on teacher education been constructed in Brazil and around the world? How has it been consolidated as such? What are the main changes in this field regarding research topics and methodologies? What are the main focuses on this field? What are the main criticisms and problems this field has faced since its establishment? What are the main recommendations concerning the field of research on teacher education in order to improve the quality of the researches and, as a consequence, to strengthen the field? Although it has been a relatively new field of research in the area of Education, the research on teacher education grows quite quickly and new challenges appear in the field in terms of quality of its academic production.
