Contrary to what one might think, children have practiced self-writing on their agendas, diaries and letters, although they have not yet adequately deserved enough attention for safekeeping and research, since they have not been valued for the adults´ universe. Publications, academic events and exhibitions of children´s writing express an inflexion point in historiography and historiography of education. Understanding that a first approach to the child´s universe, from the writing, immediately points to the realization that there is a difference between writing about childhood and writing during childhood, this article focuses on letters written by children. Therefore, we elect three studies according to the historiography of education on learning and exercise of autobiographical writing at home, in exile and at school, which allows us to question about the centrality that writing letters had in learning codes of civility, self-knowledge, moral formation and internalization of grammatical rules. In dialogue with historians of education who have produced a reflection on children’s writing, our interpretation is that, far from being a free writing, the analyzed letters are not immune to the adults’ control and, although invisible, they present the influence of their parents, tutors and teachers who encourage, applaud and correct them. We defend that it’s necessary to sensitize the public power about the urgent need to establish a policy for preserving children’s writing, particularly those in schools.
