Higher education has suffered deep transformations as a result of its democratization, the globalization of society, and the growing market demands. In this article, current challenges in university teaching are discussed as well as their implications on student learning. In order to counteract neoliberal tendencies that reduce opportunities for empowering education, we present proposals for the reconfiguration of teacher professionalism based on humanistic and democratic values. Arguments are presented for the collective construction of pedagogical cultures based on a view of the teacher as a critical intellectual and an agent of change, and on valid educational purposes, where the articulation among teaching, research and professional development is promoted, and where conditions are created for valuing and innovating teaching and learning practices. Two paths of change developed in the authors´ institutions are described, illustrating the above perspectives and showing that it is possible to look critically at the present to design the future, by promoting inquiry and the transformation of cultures where teaching occupies a secondary and largely invisible place.
