Resumen

PASSEGG, Maria da Conceição. Pierre Bourdieu: da “ilusão” à “conversão” autobiográfica. Revista da FAAEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.41, pp.223-235. ISSN 0104-7043.

“The Biographical Illusion”, by Pierre Bourdieu, published in 1986, at the time of the re-emergence of life stories in the Human and Social Sciences, became an emblematic expression of the tension between opposing tendencies: one that throws a suspicious glance at biographies, and the other one that defends its legitimacy in research. The reprint, in 2013, of Franco Ferraroti’s “History and life stories”, which certainly contributed to Bourdieu’s counter-attack, was a privileged occasion to return to bourdieuian thought on biographies, which he proposed from 1986 to 2001. Our aim is to present initial considerations from a study on the epistemology of (auto)biographical research, in which we study three works by Bourdieu: “The Biographical Illusion” (1986/1998), for its “criticism” to life stories; “The Weight of the World” (1993/2003), for its “adherence” to the biographical method; and “Sketch for a Self Analysis” (2004/2005), for its “conversion” to the autobiographical analysis. Through considerations on Bourdieu’s and Ferrarotti’s perspectives and the developing life-stories movement, that also emerged in the 80s, we highlight the (im)probable slant on Bourdieu’s thought looking forward to providing you a thematic framework of his contributions to the (auto)biographical research and going beyond the “biographical illusion”.
