Abstract

LEIRO, Augusto Cesar Rios; MORAES, Cândida Andrade de  and  SANTOS, Vanessa Ribeiro dos. Educação popular e pedagogia social: diálogo singular e experiência plural. Revista da FAEEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2015, vol.24, n.43, pp.171-182. ISSN 0104-7043.  https://doi.org/10.2015/jan.jun.v24n43.014.

This article reflect upon the historical and political relevance of popular education and its theoretical intersection with social pedagogy within a contemporary Brazilian context that is conducive to new and alternative social education practices. With this aim in mind, singularities of socially relevant education are examined through the use of two investigative experiences that take a qualitative approach. Drawing upon interviews with social workers - a privileged empirical source - the case study adopted a contrastive perspective, relying upon a methodology that incorporated discussed practices and content analysis. Social pedagogy is approached as a theoretical construct under construction in Brazil and as a substantive category in the field of education. The connection between popular education and social pedagogy reflects the legacy of Paulo Freire; the focus upon relations between teachers and students; the construction of educational praxes involving communities; and continuing education committed to the emancipation of individuals and the overcoming of social inequalities. Ultimately, this text seeks to create a new synthesis of studies in which popular education and social pedagogy promote significant formative experiences in terms of Social Education and underscore the foundational importance of this field of study in the quest for education that welcomes individuals while embracing their differences.
