MATTHIESEN, Sara Quenzer  e  SCIASCIO, Jorge Henrique de Magalhães Sasso. Learning chess: student satisfaction in playing traditional vs. Computer games. Revista da FAEEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2015, vol.24, n.44, pp.195-210. ISSN 0104-7043.  https://doi.org/10.2015/jul.dez.v24n44.0014.

Despite the ancient origins of chess, methods of teaching and playing the game have evolved little in recent centuries. However, the advent of new Information and Communication Technologies, particularly personal computers and the Internet, has seen the development of new ways of studying and playing chess. Based on data related to these new forms, we carried out this research study with the objective of evaluating students' satisfaction in engaging in traditional and online/computer chess, and determining their preferences regarding the different ways of playing the game. With this aim, two classes of Grade 4 elementary school students received 20 chess lessons according to different methodological approaches: in-class and technological. The methodology adopted was qualitative, incorporating "Non-Probability," and "Typicality", using a "Likert"-type scale and "Google docs," a "SaaS" type remote access application. Results revealed that children experienced significantly greater levels of satisfaction when they played chess in the classroom, preferring traditional to technological forms of the game, and exhibiting high levels of satisfaction when this content was integrated into the daily school curriculum.
