Abstract

HENRIQUES, António. Pedagogical modernity, transmission of cultural heritage and production of national identity: the emergence of a heritageoriented teaching in the reform of secondary education in Portugal (1894-1895). Revista da FAEEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2018, vol.27, n.51, pp.233-249. ISSN 0104-7043.  https://doi.org/10.21879/faeeba2358-0194.2018.v27.n51.p233-249.

The text analyzes how the most systematic and informed reform of secondary education in the nineteenth century in Portugal, dating from 1894-1895, sets the prevailing values for recognizing the country’s cultural heritage and hence inscribe permanently in the curriculum of public education the heritage as a structuring factor in the consolidation of the nation-state. The reform that bears the name of the leading politician, educator and researcher who participated in it, Jaime Moniz, updates the Portuguese system of education in accordance with international experiences, marking a founding moment of comparative education and the adherence to a universal pedagogy. As in the pedagogical experiences of other countries, the success of secondary education is the formation of a middle class with a general knowledge that serves as an anchor for higher studies and constitutes the common ground for the national mind-set, the formation of the civic spirit and the moral union of the nation.
