This article analyzes the social experience of school occupations in Uberlândia (MG) between October/November 2016. In this period, high school students protested occupying and taking over the management of public schools. The agenda, in principle, was organized in opposition to PEC 241, the High School Reform, and the “Escola Sem Partido” program. However, as interviews with students show, the social experience of the occupation deepened this repertoire, articulating it with issues related to the precarious structure of schools, the verticalization of school management, and criticism of the teaching-learning model. As a strategy for the occupations, and practice of a different pedagogy, the school was reframed and made public by the students. We, therefore, approach students’ conceptions and perspectives for a new school format, centered on values, and projects in line with their experiences and life expectations. In this sense, the memories of this experience, although brief, can return to the social scene for the transformation of teaching and schools.
