This study started from the Capanema Reform, in force in Brazil in the years 1942 to 1961, by the Organic Law of Secondary Education, in order to analyze its reflexes in the educational practices of students. The text presents the developments of such legislation, notably in Atheneu Sergipense, focusing on the role of the student not only as a participant in the school routine, but as a producer of it. The investigative process followed the recommendations of Viñao Frago (2000), which encompasses three points of view: the theoretical, the legal and the real. The sources used in this study were: legislative pieces that determined effective actions in the school, crafts and, above all, student and commercial newspapers that revealed outstanding student practices, such as the organization of associations, newspaper writing, creation, direction and staging of pieces theatrical performances, musical performances, in short, artistic-cultural, recreational and complementary training events, elaborated by the Sergipe student class, fostered in that “Casa de Educação Literária”.
