This text presents research results on the history of secondary education in the State of Pernambuco (Brazil) in the period from 1948 to 1963, considering the role of the political and social actors involved in the expansion of the public junior high schools. This text is based upon diversified documental sources such as government reports, education legislation, minutes from the State Legislative Assembly, statistical data, acts of law and articles published in the press. The text deals with, first, the initiatives curried out in the 1940 as regards to the expansion of the public secondary schools in the state. Second, it analyzes the process of the interiorization of the public junior high school (expansion towards the interior of the state) highlighting the contributions of the local governments (municipals), of the state deputies and state governors. The slow and late expansion of the public secondary schools in the State of Pernambuco puts in highlight the aspects of the production of regional inequalities in the education field in Brazil as well as the limits of state policies towards middle education.
