Abstract

ARAUJO, Marta Maria de. THE VICISSITUDES OF SECONDARY EDUCATION DEMOCRATIZATION IN RIO GRANDE DO NORTE (1940-1961). Revista da FAEEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2020, vol.29, n.59, pp.212-227.  Epub July 19, 2021. ISSN 2358-0194.  https://doi.org/10.21879/faeeba2358-0194.2020.v29.n59.p212-227.

The purpose of the article is to discuss trends in the expansion of socio-educational opportunities in secondary education for scholar youth in Rio Grande do Norte within the public policies scope of the Organic Law on Secondary School Education (1942-1961). For this purpose, we extensively use institutional documents and government messages. Methodologically, the work is based on the school expansion and educational extension categories, analyzed in the light of descriptive statistics, applied to data originating from the initial enrollment of the former middle school (curso ginasial, in Portuguese) and the two kinds of former high schools (colegial científico and colegial clássico, in Portuguese), as well as data regarding the completion of that level of the then secondary education. The analyzed documents revealed that the tendency of expanding the socio-educational opportunities of secondary education in Rio Grande do Norte (1942-1961) was mainly driven by the increase in the network of private secondary educational establishments, mostly female.
