Considerable expansion of secondary education in Minas Gerais, Brazil, can be perceived from 1942 to 1961. An examination was made of information in the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), in the Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos, and in the Ministério da Educação e Cultura; of education legislation in the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais; and of historiography regarding secondary education. Population growth of 42,5% occurred in this period, with expansion of 621,5% in the number of enrollments in secondary education (from 21.439 in 1942 to 154.688 in 1963) and expansion in the number of schools (from 137 schools in 1945 to 437 schools in 1959 - 219% growth). There was intense state legislative activity up to 1930, but then the national government took over educational legislation. Historiography regarding secondary education specifically in Minas Gerais consists of 57 studies, with predominance of the History of School Institutions. There was strong expansion of secondary education in Minas Gerais, with predominance of private schooling, most notably Catholic, through public funding.
