The aim of the current study is to investigate the expansion of secondary education in Rio de Janeiro State from 1945 to 1955, with emphasis on secondary school. It was based on bibliographic and documentary research on the History of Education field. Results have evidenced discreet participation of public authorities in creating schools based on this modality, as well as policies focused on granting scholarships to enable students’ attendance in private schools. The study also addressed issues such as low completion rates and the challenge of expanding education to an expressive number of students who did not have access to secondary education in Rio de Janeiro State.
